Paul wrote this epistle to equip the Colossians to stand against

the philosophy, empty deceit, traditions of men and principles

of the world that seek to cheat their faith.  (2:8-10)

The worship of Roman gods, Greek philosophy, mysticism and ascetism joined with Jewish legalism would eventually coalesce into *Gnosticism one hundred years later.

“the word of the truth of the gospel”

The communication & content of the Good News

“Saints and faithful brethren”

One group, brethren, who are set apart and faithful

“Grace to you and peace”

A greeting, blessing and prayer for;  1) God’s grace to be received and shared and, for 2) tranquility, harmony and prosperity to be experienced and then offered to others

“From God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ …

to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”

Equating the Father and Son while acknowledging the distinctions

of their positions in the Trinity.

“your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints”

Their obedience to Christ led to loving other believers

“because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven”

Their assurance of heaven was the foundation of their love

“which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel”

as opposed to the false gospel they were currently hearing

“bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth”

The gospel is the grace of God that abides in the truth of who

He is and what He has done. It immediately brings forth fruit.
